Detectives have arrested a man on suspicion of murdering a woman whose body was found in the boot of a burned-out car.

Sources said that 26-year-old Christopher Jeffrey-Shaw was held today in connection with the killing of the unnamed woman.

Her body was found by firefighters shortly after 2pm last Friday in the back of a badly burned Volkswagen Jetta, which had been dumped in a road by Ifield Golf Club near Horsham, West Sussex.

Police were initially unable to determine the gender but a post-mortem examination found it was a woman, possibly aged in her 20s, who died from smoke inhalation. She has not yet been identified.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: “A 26-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder of a woman in the Ifield murder inquiry. The man from London was detained on Tuesday. He is now in custody awaiting questioning.”

Police continued to appeal for information about the woman’s identity, and urged people to call Sussex Police on 101, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
