A young man has been knifed to death in the second fatal stabbing in west London within just three hours.

The first knife attack unfolded in Hillingdon Tube station in front of horrified witnesses shortly before 4pm on Tuesday.

A man was fatally stabbed following an “altercation” on the platform involving a group of young men, police believe.

In a separate incident, officers were called to reports of a fight near Ealing Common at about 6pm.

One person was arrested on suspicion of affray in connection to the second incident.

He has been taken to a west London police station where he remains in custody.

Det Supt Gary Richardson, from British Transport Police, said: “This was a shocking act of violence which has seen a man tragically lose his life this afternoon.

“While we are at the early stages of our investigation, we believe a group of young men were involved in an altercation on the platform before one of the men received a fatal stab wound.

“We are doing all we can to find those responsible, and I would urge any witnesses or anyone who was in the area at the time and saw anything suspicious to contact us as soon as possible.

“This level of violence is not usual on the rail network, and we will be increasing our uniformed patrols in the Hillingdon area in the coming days to help reassure the travelling public."

A section 60 order, which gives the police greater stop and search powers, was put in place for the Hillingdon and Ealing areas.

Confirming the second fatal stabbing, Scotland Yard said in statement: “Police were called at approximately 6pm to reports of a fight in the area West Lodge Avenue close to Ealing Common.

“Officers attended and found a man suffering from stab injuries. The London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance also attended.

“The man, believed to be aged in his early 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene at 6.48pm.

“His next of kin have been informed.

“A post-mortem examination will be held in due course.
