Police are investigating a series of vicious gang attacks on the South Bank in which a young man was left seriously injured.

Detectives say they are probing “a number of incidents” between Hungerford Bridge and Westminster Bridge over a five-hour period on Friday night involving up to 20 teenagers.

A 21-year-old man was found with severe head and facial injuries in York Road, near Waterloo station, shortly before 2am on Saturday.

The victim said he had been walking near the Shell Building when he was approached by a group of up to 12 men and women who attacked him.

The man was taken to hospital but has since been discharged.

Police said a 25-year-old man was assaulted in the same area at around 4.30am but the victim managed to run off and raise the alarm.

A 14-year-old girl and 15-year-old boy were arrested on suspicion of GBH and ABH in relation to the attacks.

Police said they found “a number of incidents” had taken place along the South Bank following investigations but none resulted in significant injuries.

Detective Constable Natasha Swan of Lambeth CID said: "I am appealing to anyone who was in the area and witnessed a group of up to 20 males and females, aged between 14 and 18, acting in an aggressive manner between approximately 11:30am on Friday, October 21 until around 4:30am the following morning.

"So far we are only aware of the one incident which resulted in serious injury but it is apparent this group intimidated and threatened people with their behaviour over a significant period of time.

"If you witnessed this group, or are a victim yourself, please contact us."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Lambeth CID via 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
