Scotland Yard has revealed 35 people were arrested during New Year’s Eve celebrations in London.

Police said dozens of revellers were held by officers specifically deployed for the festivities with some arrests made for violent crime and reported sex attacks.

It comes as thousands of revellers crammed onto the banks of the River Thames to watch the skies lit up by a spectacular fireworks display moments before the New Year.

A dozen arrests were made for public order offences while five were held for GBH and a further five for common assault.

Two arrests were made for assaults on police officers while two alleged sexual offences also resulted in police action.

One person was arrested for criminal damage, two for theft and another was held for drugs offences.

Five further results were classified as “other” offences.

Despite the arrest, police described the celebrations as “safe and successful” as security was stepped up in response to terror fears.

Detective Superintendent Phil Langworthy, Met Police spokesperson for the event said: "Once again, the eyes of the world were on London and a truly spectacular event has been delivered here.

“Our focus, with other emergency services was ensuring the safety of all those attending the event tonight and our officers have also worked closely alongside stewards.

"Whilst the New Year's Eve celebrations have come to a close, officers will continue to work through the night to get the streets back to normal in time for the New Year's Day parade.

"The Command Team would like to thank the thousands of officers and staff who have been involved in the planning and delivery of tonight’s policing operation.

"We would also like to thank the British Transport Police, City of London Police, Transport for London (TfL), the Greater London Authority (GLA), the Mayor of London and the event company, for their continued support in working together to ensure this was a safe and successful event for everyone to be proud of."
