The Metropolitan Police has taken over a murder investigation that was launched after a man died following a stabbing in Essex.

The man, who is in his 30s, was found injured in Epping New Road in Epping shortly before 8pm on Tuesday.

Police officers and paramedics treated him at the scene and he was taken to hospital, where he later died.

It is suggested the victim was attacked outside of the area covered by Essex Police and in an area within the Met Police's jurisdiction.

Police said inquiries continue into the circumstances and that detectives are keeping an open mind as to any motive.

His next of kin are aware and formal identification is yet to take place. A post-mortem examination will be scheduled in due course.

In a tweet at around 10.10pm on Wednesday, Essex Police said road closures that had been in place in the area had been lifted.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the incident room 0208 345 3715 or crime stoppers.
