A 16-year-old boy was stabbed as machete-wielding youths clashed in a busy town centre.

The boy was stabbed twice in the leg after a brawl broke out in Mitcham town centre in south London on Monday afternoon.

Police were called at about 3.45pm to the fight close to Barclays in Montrose Gardens.

William Boulter wrote on Facebook: “Apparently there’s mayhem in Mitcham town centre.

“Stabbings, fighting, with sections cordoned off and police everywhere.”

Tracey Harvey said: “There was a fight and someone got stabbed. Just hope the poor kid’s alright.”

The 16-year-old was described as being in a stable condition in hospital. His injuries were not thought to be life-changing.

A Met Police spokesman said: "Police were called at 3.45pm to reports of a large fight involving youths with machetes.

"A 16-year-old male was found with two stab wounds to his leg, and taken to hospital for treatment."

Two 18-year-old men have been arrested.

Witnesses are asked to call police on 101 and quote CAD 5913/23MAY16.
