This is the moment a heartless thief raced away after stealing a man's mobility scooter - leaving its owner housebound.

Police said an intruder broke in to a home while the owner was asleep before making off with the £5,000 scooter.

But the burglar was caught on camera as he fled the scene of the crime in Cradley Heath in the West Midlands.

Detective Constable Cheryl Jones said: "This is a very upsetting case as one person’s thoughtless crime as left the victim housebound and deeply distressed.

"The owner relied heavily on his mobility scooter to get about after a failed operation last year and this is a new, devastating blow for him.

"To know someone has been in his home is bad enough, but for the intruder to be so heartless as to steal his only means of getting about is just unthinkable."
