Detectives investigating an attack on two police officers by a mob of 30 school children have been handed fresh mobile phone footage of the violence.

A number of people have come forward with videos of the ambush, in which one officer was beaten to the floor while his female colleague was punched in the jaw.

Police are now scouring the footage in a bid to identify those who attacked their colleagues.

The brutal attack happened in Goodwood Road near the New Cross Road junction in Lewisham when uniformed officers on patrol noticed one of the group appeared to be carrying a knife.

When they tried to search him, the children turned on them, with one officer punched in the face several times until he fell.

His colleague tried to intervene but was hit in the face while the others continued to kick the fallen man in the head.

The November 9 attack, which occurred at around 4pm, left him with serious bruising and he had to be taken to hospital as a precaution.

Police at the scene of the attack in Lewisham

A 15-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of actual bodily harm and bailed until mid-December.

Police said they were now speaking to schools around the area to track down the attackers and are still appealing for more witnesses to come forward.

Detective Sergeant Jenny White, of Lewisham Police, said: "I'm appealing to anyone who witnessed this shocking attack on two officers to come forward and speak with us, particularly anyone with mobile phone footage of the incident.

"It happened at a very busy time of the day and there would've been a large number of people in the area.

"These officers go to work every day to keep the public safe and this demonstrates the dangers the police can face while carrying out these duties."

Anyone with information is urged to contact Lewisham CID on 020 8284 8365 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
