A pedestrian has died after he was hit by a car at a busy south London junction.

Emergency services rushed to the scene of the crash on Kelly Avenue, at the junction with Peckham Road, shortly before 6.30am on Thursday.

Paramedics battled to save the pedestrian but he was pronounced dead at the scene about half an hour later.

The Met Police said the collision involved a VW Golf. The force initially said the victim was a cyclist but later corrected this.

A man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and a failing a roadside drug test.

He has been taken to a south London police station where he remains.

A police spokesman added: "Road closures and cordons remain in place. Road users are advised to avoid the area and find alternative routes where possible."

Anyone who witnessed this incident or has dash cam footage of the collision is asked to call 101 quoting Cad 1080/30Jan or Tweet @MetCC.
