Police have launched a murder investigation after a prison inmate was stabbed to death and another two were left fighting for life this afternoon.

Officers were called to Pentonville prison at around 3.30pm following reports of the stabbing.

When they arrived, they found three prisoners all suffering from stab wounds.

One of the inmates, a man in his 20s, was pronounced dead around one hour later.

The other two injured men, aged 21 and 30, were taken to an east London hospital where they remain in a critical condition.

According to the Prison Officers Association, no staff at the facility were hurt during the incident.

A 34-year-old prisoner has been arrested in connection with the stabbings.

He remains in custody at a north London police station.

Ex-Olympic high jumper Dalton Grant tweeted he had been at the prison giving a talk when the attack happened.

He wrote: “Giving a talk at Pentonville prison today. Great to give back had to stay for a few hours longer.

“Someone got hurt. Lockdown.”
