A police officer in charge of the cells at a police station has been convicted of assaulting a 14-year-old boy in custody.

Scotland Yard said Sergeant Steven Rea, 39, beat the teenager, who had been arrested for shoplifting and assault, at Bexley Hill Police Station in October last year.

The Metropolitan Police officer, now suspended from the force, was sentenced to six months conditional discharge and ordered to pay £500 costs at Westminster Magistrates' Court, the Met said.

Rea was caught beating up the teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, on CCTV cameras at the station.

Scotland Yard said: "The offence took place on October 13 2012 at Bexley Heath Police Station when Sgt Rea was the officer in charge of the custody suite when he assaulted a 14-year-old boy that had been arrested for shoplifting and assault.

"As a result of the concerns of another officer about the actions of Sgt Rea the CCTV was viewed and the matter referred to the Directorate of Professional Standards."

Detective Chief Superintendent Alaric Bonthron from the Met's Directorate of Professional Standards said: "The custody sergeant has responsibility for the welfare of those within the custody suite especially the young and vulnerable.

"The public has a right to expect that anyone brought into a custody suite will be treated in an appropriate manner, Steven Rea let everyone down when he assaulted this boy and it is right that he has been convicted at court."

The Met said they are now able to proceed to internal misconduct proceedings.
