A police officer is recovering in hospital after he was run over as he tried to stop a driver.

The policeman had signalled the car to stop as it travelled along Grove Vale, East Dulwich, at 1am this morning.

The police officer was allegedly hit as he walked towards the car once it had stopped.

But it sped off as he approached, before crashing into a parked police car and street furniture.

Two men inside the car, both aged around 20, ran away from the scene on foot and were chased by officers.

They were arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm and possession of drugs.

Police took the injured officer to hospital in a police car with injuries to his legs, thought to not be serious.

One man was also taken to hospital by the London Ambulance Service with non-serious injuries.

Both arrested men remain in custody at a south London police station.

A spokeswoman for the LAS said: “We were called at 1.05am this morning to reports of an assault. “We sent one ambulance crew and treated a man believed to be in his 20s who was taken to hospital.”

Police said a quantity of a substance believed to be cannabis was recovered from the car.
