Police are investigating after one of Zac Goldsmith's 80-year-old constituents apparently received a death threat for backing Brexit.
Met Police said that they were looking into a "malicious communications allegation" after the Richmond MP said his constituent had received the threatening letter.
According to Mr Goldsmith, the letter read: "If you attempt to take away part of someone’s identity. There are consequences.
“We have watched, you have stoked the fires of Brexit and led us to this moment.
“You can no longer be tolerated. We are coming for you. We are going to kill you.”
The letter was signed “the real 48 per cent” in an apparent reference to the percentage of people who voted to Remain in the June 2016 EU referendum.
On the right hand corner of the letter where an address would usually be, it said: “We were born in Britain. We live in the UK. We are European.”
A spokesman for Richmond Police said: “On Monday February 5, a malicious communications allegation was reported to police.
“Officers from Richmond borough are investigating. No arrests have been made at this time.”
Mr Goldsmith told the Standard: "It’s very shocking for anyone to receive a letter like that, let alone a lady in her eighties. I handed the letter to the police and they have told me they will do what they can to identify the person behind it."
