Police were called to a shop in Putney after reports of a "loud bang" in the early hours of this morning.

Residents called police after hearing the noise in a shop just before 5am in Upper Richmond Road.

Fire crews and police sealed off the road at the junction with Putney Bridge Road while they investigated.

Four people were evacuated from above the shop after firefighters discovered that a boiler had exploded.

Dramatic images showed glass scattered across the tarmac of the closed road.

Fire crews later reported that the incident was caused by an issue with a water tank.

A Met Police spokesman said: “We were called to reports of a loud bang in the rear of a shop.

“Police worked to assist London Fire Brigade who later said they believed it was caused by a water tank issue.”

A spokesman for LFB added: "Fire crews evacuated four people from above the shops.

"The gas authority were also called to deal with the incident."
