Police have arrested a 26-year-old woman in connection with the death of a fifth-month-old baby girl, Scotland Yard has said.

The woman was arrested on suspicion of neglect and is being held at a south London police station.

Emergency services were called to reports of an unresponsive baby at a house in Glastonbury Road, Sutton, shortly before 7.15am.

The baby girl was taken to hospital where she later died.

A spokeswoman for the LAS said two ambulances arrived to find the baby in cardiac arrest. She was taken to St Helier Hospital in Carshalton, Surrey, but later died.

A spokeswoman for the Metropolitan Police said officers were called to the house by the LAS shortly after paramedics arrived.

“We know the identity of the child and next of kin have been informed,” she said. “A post mortem will be held in due course.

“The incident is being treated as suspicious.

“Officers from the Sexual Offences, Exploitation and Child Abuse Command are investigating.”
