Police are appealing after a man racially abused and assaulted a woman at a bus stop in outer east London.

Scotland Yard said two women, described as being in their 20s, were waiting at a stop by a Tesco store on Rainham Road, Rainham, when one of them accidentally trod on the foot of an elderly woman.

A man with the woman then racially abused the victims before shoving one of them with the "outside of his arm", police said.

Officers have released an image of two people they wish to trace in connection with the incident, which took place while the victims were waiting for the Route 165 bus at around 3pm on December 8.

Scotland Yard said: "The bus stop was extremely busy and officers would like to speak with anyone who witnessed the incident. They would also encourage the people featured in the image to come forward."

A spokesman added the assault victim did not require hospital treatment.
