A prisoner was today involved in a standoff with police after climbing onto the roof of Pentonville.

The man, who has identified himself as 'Titch', found his way onto the roof of a workshop at the prison in Islington after escaping his cell.

Riot police were said to be at the scene after the man was involved in a standoff for more than an hour.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "We are aware of the situation and are liasing with the Prison Service."

'Titch' told a reporter from the Islington Tribune that he was unhappy with prison conditions.

Specialist negotiators have been sent to the scene and are attempting to talk the man down.

The inmate has reportedly taken a lighter onto the roof, and fire engines were dispatched to the prison.

A London Fire Brigade spokeswoman said she was unable to comment on the incident.

A Prison Service spokesperson said: "One prisoner at HMP Pentonville has gained access to a workshop roof.

"Negotiators are at the prison and are working to safely resolve the situation."

The Prison Service confirmed the man later came down from the roof voluntarily.
