Hatton Garden-style raiders reportedly tunnelled into a jewellers on London’s Fleet Street before making off with around £1 million worth of gems.

Scotland Yard’s Flying Squad are hunting for a burglary gang who are said to have carried out the raid under the cover of Sunday’s London Half Marathon.

Police were alerted at 2am on Monday, hours after the gang smashed their way into George Attenborough & Son in what was described as a “Hatton Garden-Style” raid.

The raiders broke in through a hidden passageway linked to the William Hill betting shop next door, a source told The Sun, adding: “the planning must have been incredible.”

The Met has not disclosed what was stolen from the antique jewellery shop or how much the goods were worth, but the same newspaper reported that an estimated £1 million of gems were cleared out.

Cheering half-marathon spectators may have masked any noise the raiders could have made as they carried out the burglary while thousands of joggers ran past, it was reported.

An investigation has been launched, which is being led by detectives from the Met’s Flying Squad, and forensic examination work is continuing at the scene on Monday night.

No arrests have been made.

In statement, Scotland Yard said: “An investigation has been launched following a burglary at a jewellers in central London. A quantity of jewellery was stolen.

It added: “Enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances and identify those responsible. We are not providing further information at present, and we are not disclosing details of what was stolen.”

Any witnesses, or anyone with information, should call police via 101 quoting CAD 451/mar25. To remain anonymous, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
