The remains of an infant discovered in Kent were that of a new-born baby girl, police have revealed.

Detectives launched an appeal on Saturday to find the mother of the child amid concerns for her well-being.

The age and identity of the tot have not been confirmed, a spokesman added.

A small fire was also believed to have started close to where the body was found between 10am and 12.30pm.

Detective Inspector Richard Vickery, the senior investigating officer, said: "We’re very keen to locate the mother of this girl as we are concerned for her wellbeing and want to make sure she is receiving the necessary emotional and medical support.

"We also want to hear from anyone who was in Broadway in the late morning of March 4. Even if someone thinks what they saw isn’t important, the smallest amount of information could be crucial to us finding out how and why this happened.

"Those that do come forward should know that the information will be handled in a sensitive way.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Kent Police on 101 quoting 04-0641 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
