A severed head has been found by horrified workers at a quarry in Cambridgeshire, police say.

Major crime detectives launched an investigation following the shocking discovery on a site in Mepal, near Ely, and officers are trying to establish how long the remains had been there for.

Police have stressed it was a head and not a skull.

A spokeswoman for Cambridgeshire Police said: "We were called at about 3pm yesterday afternoon with reports of the discovery of a human head at a quarry in Mepal.

"Officers from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit are conducting enquiries, both locally and across the county borders."
