Shocking footage has emerged showing a woman being hit in the face by a man on a bus.

The victim is left with a bleeding lip after the incident - thought to have taken place last week - in Denmark Hill, south London.

The long clip begins just after the woman boards the single-decker bus, with the man apparently refusing to move his leg after she pushes a trolley into his foot.

"Why are you pushing it into my foot," he asks before adding: "Are you stupid?"

The pair then begin an angry verbal exchange as other passengers on the bus - thought to be a route 484 service - ask them to calm down.

The man then appears to warn the woman, who seems significantly older than him, by saying: "You better stop talking to me, because you'll get me angry."

Eventually the woman sits down as the pair continue to argue, with the young man taunting her by mimicking speech with his hand close to her face.

Innit boyz,.... no regard for their elders....

Moments later the man, who is on the phone, appears to slap the victim with the back of his hand, prompting her to stand up and hit him back at least twice before he wrestles her on to her seat.

She can then be heard saying: "Look at blood coming out my mouth."

Later, as the man tries to exit the bus despite interventions by other passengers, the visibly shaken woman appears to have a badly bleeding lip.

She then repeatedly tells the man: "You are not going anywhere," and "you are running away".

In the background the bus driver, who has stopped the vehicle near Love Walk on Denmark Hill, can be heard calling emergency services and asking for an ambulance and the police.

A spokeswoman for the Metropolitan Police said: "Officers from Southwark Safer Transport Team are assessing recorded footage, showing an incident on a bus where a woman is assaulted.

"Officers are trying to establish when and where the footage was taken and enquiries are ongoing.

"Anyone who has information that may assist, or was on the bus when the footage was taken, is asked to call Southwark Safer Transport Team on 07787 780 783 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
