The pilot of a jet that crashed at Shoreham air show in 2015, killing 11 men, is to be charged with manslaughter by gross negligence.

Andrew Hill, of Hertfordshire, faces 11 counts of gross negligence manslaughter and one count of endangering an aircraft.

The crash occurred on August 22, 2015, after the 1950s fighter bomber Hill was flying failed to pull out of a loop-the-loop and crashed into a fireball.

Hill, a trained Royal Air Force instructor and fast jet pilot, was thrown clear of the aircraft but taken to hospital with serious injuries and placed into an induced coma before being discharged.

The reviewing lawyer Simon Ringrose said: “The Crown Prosecution Service has considered a full file of evidence received from Sussex Police in relation to the deaths of 11 men at the Shoreham Air Show in 2015.

“Following a careful review of the evidence I have found there is sufficient evidence to charge Andrew Hill with the manslaughter by gross negligence of the 11 men who died.

"I have also authorised a further charge against Mr Hill of endangering an aircraft.

"Mr Hill will be formally charged with the offences and will appear before the courts in due course."

Prior to the announcement, Conservative MP Tim Loughton, who represents Shoreham, told the BBC that families were waiting too long to get the truth.

He said: “I am most concerned that it has taken so long to get to this point.”

In March, a special bulletin published by the Air Accidents Investigation Branch said the flying display director of the show was not aware of the sequence of stunts that were set to be carried out by the aircraft.

Organisers decided to scrap this year's Shoreham Air Show out of respect for the victims and their families.

Hill, who turns 54 on Thursday, is due to appear before Westminster Magistrates' Court on April 19.
