A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a stabbing in a seaside town.

The victim, a man in his 40s, was taken to hospital with serious injuries after police were called to Southport Promenade at 3.40pm on Saturday.

Merseyside Police said a 43-year-old man from Southport was detained nearby and is being questioned on suspicion of attempted murder.

Officers were carrying out forensic and witness enquiries.

Det Insp Tony O'Brien said: "Officers acted quickly to detain a suspect at the scene in connection with this incident.

"However, we still need to speak to anyone who saw the incident or its aftermath as soon as possible.

"It is a busy and sunny afternoon with plenty of people around, so tell us what you know as we look to piece together exactly what happened.

"Violence has no place in our communities and I can assure everyone in the area that we will act on your information to ensure those responsible are dealt with."

Anyone with information should call 101 with reference 640, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
