A young man has been stabbed to death at a park in east London.

Police and paramedics fought to save the victim, thought to be aged in his 20s, who was knifed in Stratford Park this afternoon.

He was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after 3pm.

Two men have been arrested in connection with the incident and taken into custody, police said.

London’s Air Ambulance was also scrambled to the scene.

Pictures emerged on social media of police and ambulance vehicles lining West Ham Lane outside the park as passersby crowded around the railings.

Tony Cook, 29, was driving along the road to pick his two daughters up from school when he saw police hurtling towards the park.

He told the Standard: “As I was going on the school run I could see the air ambulance above me looking to land. I also saw the faces of concerned police officers running at full pace to attend.

“On my way back from the school run, I could see loads of police officers patrolling the park and also escorting parkgoers safely out of the park.

"The emergency services looked to have everything under control.

“It's a shame Newham has got like this. I’ve lived in Stratford all my life and when I was growing up it was a fist fight, no-one was killed, just a little battered.

“What is the world coming to? I don't really want my two daughters growing up around here if I'm totally honest.”

Jacques Lockwood, 23, who lives opposite the park said: “I work from home so it was odd hearing a helicopter landing over the road.

“When I looked outside the road was packed with police cars, blaring sirens and a group of officers running into the park.

"This was around 3 o'clock I think.

“Maybe an hour later the helicopter took off, and I could see a group of people in hazmat suits in the centre of the park taking photos and there seemed to be lots of other gear too.

“There's still a big blue tent near where the incident occurred and the park is still locked down over 4 hours later.”

Metropolitan Police spokesman said: “Enquiries continue to establish the identity of the deceased.

“A post-mortem examination will be arranged in due course.”

Anyone with the information is asked to call police on 101 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
