A student nurse was punched and scratched by a homeless woman after she tried to protect her from being attacked.

The 19-year-old victim attempted to break up a fight between a couple in Brassey Avenue, Easbourne when the woman lashed out at her.

She was punched in the face and stomach as she walked home close to Hampden Park train station at about 7.20pm on Thursday (October 30).

Her attacker then began to apologise and tried to shake her hand because she said she had mistaken her for someone else, police said.

In an appeal for information about the attack, Sussex Police said the couple were "possibly part of the homeless community".

Police constable James Breeds said: "I am appealing for anyone who saw this unpleasant incident or anyone who knows the woman to contact us."

Police said the woman was white, 5' 4" and large. She was wearing a puffer jacket and had her hair in a tight ponytail.

Anyone with information can contact police on 101, email 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk quoting serial number 1571 30/10 or speak to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
