This is the blood-stained aftermath of a shooting in south London when police marksmen hit a man carrying a knife with Tasers and gunshots.

The 25-year-old suspect was shot three times when he kept coming at officers even after being hit with 50,000-volt charges from stun guns.

He was critically injured, with wounds in the stomach, leg and hand, but it emerged today that he is now in a stable condition and is set to make a remarkable recovery.

His survival is even more extraordinary because police marksmen used hollow point ammunition designed to expand on impact, which causes more serious injuries.

The bullets were introduced by police as they are less likely to travel through bodies and hit bystanders.

Police were called to reports of a man breaking into cars in Elsinore Road in Forest Hill early on Sunday.

Unarmed officers asked for back-up after were confronted by a man with a large knife.

After armed response units arrived, police marksmen first fired Tasers at the man but when these failed to incapacitate him they fired five shots, three of which hit him.

Photographs of the scene are being examined by the Independent Police Complaints Commission, which is investigating the shooting.

The watchdog says it is still looking into exactly how many times the man was hit by a Taser and how many were fired.

It is asking witnesses to call 0800 096 9077.
