A man charged with the rape of an 11-year-old girl on her way home from school will go on trial next year.

Opemipo Jaji, 18, is also charged with attempted rape after the attack on the schoolgirl in Enfield, north London, on Friday November 23.

Mr Justice Saunders set a provisional trial date of April 10 at the hearing at the Old Bailey today where Jaji appeared from prison over a video link.

The victim, who was dressed in her school uniform, was walking along Galliard Road and was dragged inside Jubilee Park to the pitch and putt area where she was raped.

She returned home after the ordeal between 7.45pm and 8pm and police were immediately called.

She was taken to hospital where she was treated for serious injuries and underwent surgery.

No application was made for bail for Jaji today, while a date for a plea and case management hearing was set for January 31.
