A transgender woman being held at a male prison has been found dead in her cell.
Jenny Swift, 49, from Seaforth in Sefton, Merseyside, was found unconscious at HMP Doncaster in South Yorkshire in the early hours of December 30.
Prison staff and paramedics attempted to resuscitate her but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
She was being held at HMP Doncaster while on remand but an anonymous friend told the Sheffield Star she had asked to be put into a women's prison.
A Prison Service spokesperson said: “HMP Doncaster prisoner Jenny Swift was found unresponsive in her cell at 00.40am on Friday December 30.
“Prison staff and paramedics attempted CPR but she was pronounced dead at 1.10am.
“As with all deaths in custody, there will be an independent investigation by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman.”
