A Tube passenger punched and bit police officers at Tottenham Court Road station before boasting they had been infected with HIV, it is claimed.

Three police officers needed hospital treatment after the attack at around 5.50pm yesterday.

British Transport Police (BTP) had been called after reports of a disturbance on one of the Northern Line platforms and suffered injuries when they arrested the man.

Assistant Chief Constable Mark Newton tweeted the officers had been punched, spat at and bitten by the man, who then claimed they had been “infected with HIV”.

A BTP spokesman said one officer was left with a head injury, another hurt their hand and a third was left with minor injuries. All three were taken to hospital and later discharged.

The man was arrested on suspicion of causing a public order offence and taken to hospital for assessment.

HIV cannot be passed on through biting or by saliva.

Anyone who witnessed the incident should call 0800 40 50 40, or text 61016, quoting 478 of 18/2.
