A teenager fighting for life in hospital was shot in the head after arguing with a cyclist earlier in the day, police say.

The 18-year-old was with a group of friends outside his home near Turnpike Lane yesterday afternoon when a man fired a series of shots at the group.

Emergency services were called by the boy’s shocked mother and the injured teen was rushed to hospital where he remains in a life-threatening condition.

Detectives are now investigating whether the shooting was linked to an argument two hours earlier.

The victim, his brother and friends had been driving along the high street near New River Avenue at around 1.30pm when they stopped to speak to a man on a bike they knew.

After stopping their car, the victim and his brother rowed with the cyclist, police say.

Detective Chief Inspector Dan Brown, leading the investigation from the Trident and Area Crime Command, said: “At this stage in the investigation we are keeping an open mind regarding possible motivation, but one line of enquiry we are looking into is if the shooting is linked to this earlier row.

"The man involved in the altercation has been described as having olive skin.

“The row happened in the street, and I'm sure will have been witnessed by a number of people. If you were out in the high street and saw anything that may help then please pass that information to us.”

The gunman is described as of Mediterranean appearance and aged around 18.

He had walked up Turnpike Lane from the direction of the Tube station with another man, who was black and also aged around 18.

After the shooting, police believe both men fled on bicycles along Turnpike Lane towards the high street.

DCI Brown said: “This was a bold attack in broad daylight on the victim's doorstep and I want to hear from anyone that knows who the suspects are or who may have vital information for us."

Anyone with information should call police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
