Two men have been found guilty of murdering a teenager who was shot in broad daylight in south east London.

Ben Purdy, 18, was shot in the face while walking through the Abbeyfield estate in Bermondsey at about 2pm on November 23 last year and died in hospital a day later.

Michael Bagnall, 22, of Hospital Way, Hither Green, and Andrew Bayne, 37, of Trundleys Terrace, Bermondsey, were today convicted of Ben’s murder.

Bagnall was also found guilty of affray and Bayne was also convicted of possessing a firearm with intent to cause fear or violence.

At the time of his death, Ben was in a relationship with Bagnall’s former girlfriend and he had gone to his home with two friends to sort out ongoing problems.

The three friends were chased from the address by Bagnall and another man who was armed with a sword, running to Mossington Gardens.

A blue Ford Focus, driven by Bayne and carrying Bagnall as a passenger, pulled up and Ben was shot by a handgun brandished by Bayne.

One of Ben’s friends, who was 19 at the time of the incident, had a handgun put in his mouth and he was struck on the head by a baseball bat.

He required hospital treatment but his injuries were not life threatening. The other friend, aged 24, escaped without injury.

Detectives later recovered a baseball bat, a shell casing from a bullet and a bike chain with a padlock attached at the scene.

Bayne and Bagnall were sentenced to life in prison on Friday and ordered to serve at least 30 and 28 years respectively.

Three other men were also convicted of offences in connection with the murder and will be sentenced at a later date.

Harry McAleer, 18, of Elcot Avenue, Peckham, was found guilty of conspiracy to commit actual bodily harm, Reece Bayne, 19, of Concorde Way, Bermondsey, was found guilty of conspiracy to commit actual bodily harm; and Anthony Bayne, 34, of Alpine Road, Bermondsey, was found guilty of affray.

Lee-Anne Bagnall, 20, of Hospital Way, Hither Green, was found not guilty of affray.
