A van driver who drove almost 50 miles along a motorway in the wrong direction has been remanded in custody.

Ryan Nee, 19, stole the vehicle in Billericay, Essex, and drove north along the southbound carriageway of the M11 towards Cambridgeshire, Basildon Magistrates’ Court heard.

Police pursued him through the village of Ongar and on to Hastingwood.

They eventually stopped him in Godmanchester during the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Nee, of Harebell Way, Romford, now faces charges of burglary, taking a motor vehicle without consent, dangerous driving, driving without insurance and driving without a licence.

He is due to appear at Basildon Crown Court on August 22.
