A man branded "lord of the fly-tips" after an eight month dumping spree around north-west London has been handed a 12-month suspended sentence.

Philip Cash, 65, charged people hundreds of pounds to collect their household waste, saying he would dispose of it properly.

But in reality he callously dumped the rubbish, totalling four-and-a-half tonnes, around Harrow, including the Newton Farm Ecology Park beauty spot near his home Alexandra Avenue home.

On one occasion he even collected a TV and two sofas from one house and dumped them minutes later on the same street.

Items he fly-tipped included household furniture, plasterboard and small mountains of rubble.

After being caught, Cash, who had two previous convictions for similar offences, admitted five separate illegal dumps committed between November 2015 and June 2016 at Hendon Magistrates' Court.

On Thursday he was given a 12-month prison term, suspended for two years, an electronic tag, a fine of £5,990 and was banned from driving for 12 months.

The conviction came after a year-long investigation by Harrow council.

Councillor Graham Henson, who has cabinet responsibility for environmental crimes, said: “Mr Cash was the lord of the fly-tips in west London – but we’ve brought his criminal career to a close.

"He’s the biggest catch of the year in the fight against filth.

"Fly-tipping is a national blight and Harrow’s taking the lead in making criminals like Mr Cash pay for the misery they cause.

"If you dump in our back yard, you will get caught, and you will pay the price.”
