A pensioner is fighting for her life after being smashed to the ground during a street robbery in west London.

The woman, 71, was left with a critical head injury after being attacked and robbed of her handbag in Curzon Avenue, Stanmore, on Tuesday evening.

She was taken to a central London hospital where police said her condition was “critical but stable”.

Scotland Yard believes the woman was knocked to the ground by a handbag-snatcher in his late 30s, wearing a light grey tracksuit, black trainers and a brown hat.

Det Sgt Gideon Mitchell, from Barnet’s Major Crime Unit, said: “This was a particularly nasty and callous attack on an elderly woman.

“I would urge anyone who recognises the description of the suspect, or who has any information that may assist our investigation, to contact officers.”

No arrests have been made.

Anyone with information or anyone who saw the assault is asked to call police on 020 8733 4125 or the non-emergency line on 101. You can also call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
