A woman on a mobility scooter has been hospitalised after being hit by a van in south London.

One witness said the incident in Bermondsey appeared to be "really, really bad" and described seeing the scooter underneath the front of the larger vehicle.

Police said officers were called to the crash at the junction of Jamaica Road and St James's Road shortly after 12.30pm.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said medics at the scene were "assessing" the condition of the woman, thought to be in her late 60s.

Witness Lee Heppell said: "The mobility scooter is under the front of the van. It's really really bad - the fire brigade are in attendance.

"It's mayhem here at the minute."

London Ambulance Service said it sent crews to reports of a road traffic collision, and treated a woman reportedly in her 60s before taking her to King's College Hospital.

The incident closed Jamaica Road in both directions.
