The scale of concern over what will replace GCSE and A-levels can be revealed by the “overwhelming” number of pupils, parents and teachers who have responded to the government’s proposals.

More than 100,000 people took part in the consultation.

About half of the responses were from students, who are “terrified” of suffering the same fate as last year’s pupils who were caught up in the summer grading fiasco.

Professor Alan Smithers of the University of Buckingham said: “The response rate shows how concerned the country is about the lack of definite information.

"Schools, pupils and parents have for far too long been left in the dark about the awarding of grades.

“It would have been much better if the Government had shown some leadership and pinned down the assessment process.”

Plans for how students will be assessed could take up to four more weeks to be published.
