Schools will be given hundreds of thousands of pounds to test whether iPads and texting can be used to improve learning among poorer children.

The Education Endowment Foundation will tomorrow announce a series of grants to schools that are using technology in innovative ways.

The charity wants to collect evidence of how successful the projects are.

Rosendale Primary School, in Lambeth, will be given £253,000 to test the benefit of iPads in the classroom.

Children at the school currently use the devices to take photographs and sound or video recordings, “tagging” the clips with notes about how difficult they found the work, which teachers can look at.

A £532,000 grant will be awarded to a scheme, tested by teams from Harvard and Bristol universities at 34 schools, that sends parents text messages about their children’s progress to increase involvement.
