Teachers to strike next month in long-running pay dispute

7 February 2014

Teachers in England and Wales will go on strike next month, the National Union of Teachers announced today.

They will walk out of classrooms on March 26 in a long-running dispute over pay, pensions and conditions.

The union blamed the Education Secretary for causing disputes with the profession. General secretary Christine Blower said: “Michael Gove’s persistent refusals to address our ongoing dispute over pay, pensions and conditions of service, is unnecessary and deeply damaging.

As a result, thousands of good, experienced teachers are leaving or considering leaving the job and a teacher shortage crisis is looming.”

A spokeswoman for the Department for Education said: “Parents will struggle to understand why the NUT is pressing ahead with strikes over the Government’s measures to let heads pay good teachers more.”
