Young teachers 'do not feel valued'

Young teachers do not feel valued and respected by the Government, an annual conference has heard.

More than eight out of 10 young teachers (83 per cent) feel the Government rarely or never respects and values teachers, delegates at the NASUWT Young Teachers' Consultation Conference in Birmingham heard today.

Nearly half (45 per cent) of young teachers said excessive workload was their main concern, while job insecurity was a worry for one in five (19 per cent), the conference heard.

And almost a quarter of teachers said they were rarely or never given any opportunities to access professional development and training.

The conference, held at the Hilton Metropole hotel in the city, also heard more than 51% of teachers had been victims of bullying and harassment during their careers, with poor pupil behaviour also flagged up as a serious concern.

More than 200 young teachers gathered for the annual conference to discuss the challenges facing the teaching profession and the impact of the Government's policies on children and young people.

Chris Keates, general secretary of the NASUWT, who spoke at the conference, said: "A staggering 97 per cent of young teachers from across the UK have told us today that they do not believe that their Government understands the day-to-day realities of teaching.

"It was clear that the young teachers at the conference are absolutely and fully committed to being great teachers and to serving the children and young people they teach.

"However, their professional effectiveness is being undermined as a result of the Government's cuts to education and the damaging impact of the accountability regime.

"The NASUWT will be meeting with Government ministers throughout the UK to discuss with them how they intend to address the concerns raised at the conference to ensure that pupils can continue to benefit from the skills, talents and expertise of young teachers."
