I know how it feels to struggle with reading, says Strictly's Kara Tointon

Dyslexia diagnosis: Kara Tointon
10 April 2012

Strictly Come Dancing star Kara Tointon today backed the Evening Standard's literacy campaign saying children are not getting enough help with reading.

The 28-year-old actress was diagnosed with dyslexia at seven and battled to overcome the condition and learn to read confidently.

Today she threw her weight behind our Get London Reading campaign, saying the one-to-one mentoring for pupils will prove invaluable.

She said: "The campaign is fantastic and really positive. I was one of the fortunate people because I was diagnosed with dyslexia very early.

"But when I learned more about dyslexia I was shocked that some other people now are not as lucky as I was all those years ago."

Tointon said she only started reading books for fun within the last few years.

Tointon, who presented a BBC documentary about dyslexia last year, is supporting a new "pop up" library opening in Selfridges tomorrow. It is part of the store's Words Words Words campaign.

The library will have 15,000 inspirational books chosen by four publishers and a number of celebrities. It will also host a series of classes - including story-telling and poetry - lectures and handwriting analysis. Selfridges Library runs until March 1.
