Customers at Waitrose helped to raise almost £10,000 for the Get London Reading campaign while doing their weekly shop.

The supermarket chain donated £9,378 to the Standard's literacy drive through its Community Matters scheme. Shoppers at 32 London stores used tokens to vote for which charities should benefit from money donated by Waitrose.

Volunteer Reading Help, the charity supported by the literacy campaign, was awarded the cash which will help pay for 56 more mentors to help schoolchildren read. Waitrose donated £5,000 to the campaign last year.

Bayswater branch manager Chloe Thompson said: "Helping children to enjoy reading is a cause that is very close to our hearts. So many Waitrose branches have come together to support this cause. We are delighted, and we hope our contribution helps more children."

Melanie Lintott, VRH southern regional manager, said: "A huge thank you to all the Waitrose stores. We would also like to thank all of Waitrose's customers who chose to pop their green token in the VRH box to help raise such a phenomenal amount for the Get London Reading campaign."
