Nearly 20,000 people have pledged money to help treat sick baby Charlie Gard but his parents are still more than £700,000 off their £1.2 million target with a deadline approaching.

Specialists at Great Ormond Street Hospital believe it is time to stop providing life-support treatment to seven-month-old Charlie, who has a rare genetic condition, and that he should move to a palliative care regime.

But his parents, postman Chris Gard and Connie Yates, of Bedfont, west London, want to be allowed to take him to a hospital in America where they hope he will be treated.

The couple, in their thirties, have an appeal on the GoFundMe website and say they need to raise £1.2 million to pay for treatment in the US by Monday.

Almost 20,000 people have pledged money, raising nearly £450,000.

A judge is due to analyse evidence at a hearing in the Family Division of the High Court next month before deciding what is in Charlie’s best interests.
