A group of east London school pupils have come up with a ground-breaking new condom which begins glowing if the wearer has a sexually transmitted infection.

Three pupils from Isaac Newton Academy, in Ilford, scooped a technology prize worth £1,000 after dreaming up the revolutionary concept.

Daanyaal Ali, Chirag Shah, both 14, and 13-year-old Muaz Nawaz have now been invited to Buckingham Palace after the condom – called the S.T.EYE – topped the best health innovation category at the TeenTech awards.

The concept, which has yet to be developed, features a layer impregnated with molecules that attach to bacteria and viruses, allowing it to change colour.

The designers said it might glow green for chlamydia, yellow for herpes, purple for genital warts and blue for syphilis, the Daily Mail reported.

Daanyaal Ali told the Daily Mail: "We created the S.T.EYE as a new way for STI detection to help the future of the next generation.

"We wanted to create something that makes detecting harmful STIs safer than ever before, so that people can take immediate action in the privacy of their own homes without the invasive procedures at the doctors."
