The parents of a toddler at Great Ormond Street Hospital today spoke of the need for new and kinder treatments for child cancers as a charity drive to fund their research was launched.

Isla Austin is 17 months old and has neuroblastoma, a rare type of cancer. She first came to GOSH on her first birthday and will have a range of intensive treatments over the next 13 months.

Her mother Anna said: “She had surgery and chemotherapy and is responding well, however she is so poorly from the side effects, suffering from hair loss, sickness and aching bones.”

Bucket collections will take place at more than 450 Tesco stores in London from today until Sunday.

Tim Johnson, chief executive of GOSH Children’s Charity, said: “We are hugely grateful to Tesco. We hope that with the support of their colleagues and customers we will be able to raise lots of money to fund research into difficult-to-treat childhood cancers.”
