Millions of middle-aged men could be seriously damaging their health by drinking almost three times the recommended alcohol limit, according to new research.

A survey by Drinkaware found around 3.5 million men aged from 45 to 65 were downing an average of 37 units, or 16 pints of beer, on a weekly basis.

The current recommended weekly alcohol limit is just 14 units, but more than half the men surveyed did not believe they were putting their health at risk.

Drinkaware is advising men that cutting back by just one drink a day could nearly halve their risk of an alcohol-related death.

Chief executive Elaine Hindal said: “For a large number, drinking is part of their daily routine and often goes unnoticed.”

"Our ‘Have a little less, feel a lot better’ campaign, which launches today, aims to show these drinkers reducing alcohol consumption, even by just a few drinks each week, can begin to make a big difference to their long term health."
