BBC political editor Nick Robinson is recovering at home with his family tonight after a successful operation to remove a lung tumour.

The 51-year-old journalist announced last month that he was suffering from cancer.

He has said he now hopes to be well enough to return to work in time to cover the general election campaign.

Thanking his supporters for their messages today, he tweeted: "Thank you for the many kind and generous messages. Here's hoping to be back reporting the news soon."

Referring to his plans to watch tonight's FA Cup clash between Manchester United and Arsenal, he added: "Just home from hospital in time to watch the big match. Not sure the next 90 minutes will be the rest the doctors ordered."

Carcinoid tumours are rare and tend to be slow growing, sometimes not causing any symptoms for several years, according to Cancer Research UK.

About a quarter start in the lung and typically do not spread to other parts of the body.

In a statement released tonight, Mr Robinson's agent Mary Greenham said the journalist was "regaining his strength" following the operation.

She said: "Nick Robinson was discharged from hospital today after a successful operation on his lung to remove a carcinoid tumour last week.

"Nick is now recovering from his surgery at home with his family whilst regaining his strength. He and his wife Pippa are grateful for all the support they have received over the last week and now ask that his privacy is respected whilst he recuperates."
