Telling public to wear face masks ‘would put NHS supplies at risk’

Confusion over whether face masks would reduce the spread of Covid-19 in public places deepened today as a minister suggested that there may not be enough to go round even if scientists recommend their use on public transport and in offices.

Simon Clarke said the Government was “prioritising the front line” by advising that only medics and carers should wear masks, implying that the policy was partly driven by a shortage of resources as well as by science.

A review of mask policy was being conducted today by scientists and medical experts on the Government Nervtag (New and Emerging Respiratory Virus Threats Advisory Group) committee.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan repeated his call for DIY facemasks made from scarves or cloth to be required for Tube and bus passengers to reduce the risk of infections.

A No 10 source told the Standard that current thinking in Whitehall was that masks could have a role when lockdown is eased, perhaps next month.

“You could see the public wearing a form of mask when people start going back to work in greater numbers, perhaps on London Underground and in offices.”

Mr Clarke said the rules would change if the scientific advice from Nervtag was amended, but added that would only happen “when we have the ability to follow that advice, if that is indeed what turns out to be the recommendation”.

Chris Hopson, the chief executive of NHS Providers, intervened last night with a warning that supplies of masks to the NHS could be gobbled up by the public if everyone was advised to wear them.

He tweeted: “Fluid repellent masks for health and care staff are key to avoid the spread of coronavirus. Securing the supply of masks, when there is huge global demand, is crucial.”
