A bit addictive...one in four checks value of their London home every week

Not selling: Jane Holbrook re-calculates the value of her flat “every week or two”

A growing number of Londoners have become property-price junkies, regularly checking what their home could be worth, according to new research.

An ICM survey found that 24 per cent of homeowners in the capital said they go online every week to work out the likely value. A further 17 per cent check at least once a month compared with a figure of six per cent for homeowners across the UK.

Russell Quirk, founder of low-cost online estate agent eMoov.co.uk which commissioned the study, said: “As property prices rocket, homeowners are becoming addicted to finding out how much asset-richer they are getting. It’s a new variant of property porn.”

Self-confessed property junkie Jane Holbrook, a recruiter for an investment bank, has “no intention” of selling her two-bedroom garden flat in NW2, but admitted: “I probably re-calculate the value of the flat every week or two.

“In this market it can become a bit addictive… According to one website today it’s worth £412,000. Next week, who knows?”

ICM surveyed 2,000 people between 16 and 27 March.
