Actors’ venue saved in rail arch revamp

Rail bosses have granted clemency to a theatre that was threatened with closure to make way for offices.

But Network Rail is pushing ahead with plans to evict several other firms from beneath railway arches in Southwark, with scores of jobs under threat. The remaining businesses said the gesture by Network Rail had made them “even more defiant”.

Four firms — including a costumier to the stars, a removals company and a minicab firm — occupy nine arches on lines running to London Bridge and Blackfriars, and have been told to leave by autumn.

The rail giant wants to transform the space into offices so it can triple rents. More than 2,000 locals have signed a petition opposing the scheme, saying it would destroy businesses that are vital to a thriving community.

A Network Rail spokesman said: “Discussions are ongoing with other tenants and we will provide assistance to relocate to other premises within our property portfolio where possible.”

Sasha Regan, founder of the Union Theatre, called the news “bitter-sweet” and vowed to continue the fight to save neighbouring businesses.
