An army officer is preparing to cycle 100 miles in just five hours to raise funds for a charity that helps blind veterans.

Major Simon Hall, from Battersea, south London, will take on the Prudential Ride London-Surrey 100 in aid of Blind Veterans UK.

The event on August 10 aims to celebrate the legacy for cycling created by London 2012.

Cyclists will set off from Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, travelling on closed roads through the Surrey countryside before finishing on The Mall.

Mr Hall, who serves with the Royal Engineers, joined the Army in 2002 and has served in the UK, Canada and Iraq.

He said he had ridden 100 miles before but never in a time of five hours.

He said: "This will be a tough challenge for me. I've been cycling seriously for about three years now and had desperately wanted to cycle the Prudential Ride London-Surrey 100.

"It's an incredible route and a unique opportunity to cycle through closed-off streets in London - essentially, the atmosphere of the London Marathon on a bike.

He continued: "I had been planning to do the event in any case, but cycling the event for Blind Veterans UK was a great way of raising money for a very worthwhile organisation."
